You’ve landed! You’re all rested and relaxed because you were prepared for the long flight and were able to find a comfortable seat and position that allowed you to get some rest. But now, it’s time to get out of that seat and get going!

Going through Immigrations and Customs, then finding your bags at the baggage claim can all be aggravating experiences. Allow me to take you through the process and help you along the way with some tips from personal experience.

The Secret Ingredient Revealed!

The contest is over! We got a total of 7 official guesses on this contest, and unfortunately the actual guesses were incorrect. However, 2 people did mention the Secret Ingredient in the discussion!

More than one person mentioned beer. Some deep frying batters also use beer to introduce gas into the batter to make it light. I have also heard club soda, or soda water being used. However those ingredients don’t seem to be as effective as what I am about to tell you. (more…)

National Treasure: Book of Secrets, A Must See!

Today, Hui-chen and I went to see the new movie National Treasure: Book of Secrets.  I’m a huge fan of Nicolas Cage, and we both saw the last National Treasure film in the theater.  While most sequels leave a lot to be desired, this movie packs even more action than the original.  With a believable performance by Bruce Greenwood as the President of the United States (except that Mr. Greenwood is too smart to actually be a President of the US), and the returning character played by Harvey Keitel, (in fact all the old characters are there, except the bad guy, this time played by Ed Harris) this movie is actually better than the original.  Add the amazingly always-hot-not-matter-how-old-she-gets, Hellen Mirren, and you have dynamic, kick-ass cast!

Plus, they gave us this way-cool pouch with chocolate money:

The Neighbor’s Dog

UPDATE: Late in the afternoon, the neighbor’s dog got away from him, and the dog ran after a passing motor scooter, forcing the female driver to stop (I wouldn’t have - I would have run him over). I was there of course, with my camera, and I captured a very revealing set of photos presented at the bottom of this article. The shots of the neighbor chasing the dog with a stick are priceless!

Every morning my wife and I are woken up by our neighbor’s dog barking across the street. This has been going on since we first moved here, so I assume that it’s been like this forever. Hui-chen’s mother visited us on one occasion and the neighbors asked her “Why don’t they like dogs?” referring to Hui-chen and I. The reason for the question is because we frequently yell out of the window for the dog to shut up. Apparently why we yell at their dog is a connection that wasn’t made by the owners. We’re supposed to love his dog as much as he does (which isn’t saying much).

Our neighbor shares a laugh with the police - it’s all just great fun!

Readers of ex-pat blogs notice that we tend to complain about a lot of things. I certainly have my share of gripe posts on our blog. Heck, I’ve even based an entire series around complaining, called Sound Off! But, it’s very important for our readers to understand just how much I love Taiwan, and admire the Taiwanese people. So much so, that I’m making a list:
