Part of the 2010 USA Trip Series

The First Part Of Our Trip

I used to have a wood smoker back in New Hampshire, and I have missed smoking foods in Taiwan (although I do have a smoker in Thailand).  We went in halves with my sister and her husband and picked up this Brinkmann smoker at Home Depot.  I got to use it quite a few times during our visit.  We’ll show you what we put in the smoker shortly.

It’s hard to believe that November is already 1/2 gone – but it is!  This week was nearly all home style food and very little take-out.  So let’s get right into it.

This Week in Food, 4609

First up, more steak!  Costco had a special on their ribeye steaks this week so we got a freezer full!  Here are 2 of them on the new gas grill.  If you would like to see what they looked like all nice and cooked, please continue reading!

Hui-chen and I were in B&Q the other day (the local store that is very much like the US’s Home Depot) and we saw this gas grill:

So you know this photo was taken at our home, so you know we bought it.  NT$5,000, 2 burners, how can you go wrong?

We're Still Here!

This is a big glass contained of sun tea that was brewing outside our home this afternoon.

UPDATE: Here is Ashish’s account of the day, on his blog.  Here is Carrie’s account of the day’s events.

I have 2 videos for you from that day.  I’ve embedded them at the end of this article for your convenience.

It was time for another fantastic day at the Miaoli cabin.

Like, usual, the event started out by my talking with Becky about another party.  We invited a few people we knew would enjoy being there, and before you know it, we had a party on our hands!

Miaoli In July

I know this is an unusual opening shot but whenever you see charcoal being started with a torch you know you’re in for some serious cooking of some sort!  Today was no exception!

We’re proud to bring you a guest article written by our friend Mike, from Lynn, Massachusetts.  Mike is a frequent reader of this blog (as well as a long-time personal friend of The Bushman) and he knows our readers love articles about food!  So, please enjoy Mike’s first guest article:

The 2009 Phantom Gourmet BBQ Beach Party

Photos and article by Mike01905

Its time again fro the Phantom Gourmet BBQ Beach Party. “The Phantom Gourmet” is a TV show in the Boston area.  They review restaurants throughout most of the 6-state New England region and they review everything that is food related. Whether its Chinese, Sushi, Pizza, BBQ, Seafood, Bakeries, Candy shops, and anything else you can think of, they’ve reviewed it.

For the past 3 years, TV show has sponsored their BBQ Beach Party. They visited various BBQ Masters around the USA and invited the best of those that they visited to come to Boston to take part. The first 2 years were held at Boston City Hall Plaza. This year they held the event in 2 locations. On June 19-21 they were at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods in Ledyard, CT and on June 26-28 they were at Suffolk Downs in East Boston, MA.

Now I’m not much of a writer… but here is my article that MJ wanted me to write on the 2009 Phantom Gourmet BBQ Beach Party. I think at this time I need to give MJ’s “food warning” for this article.

We had been wanting to do another roof party for some time, but lately we’ve been battling bad weather.  All during the week we were watching the weather forecasts to see if the approaching typhoon would veer off and spare us.  It did!  The party was a “go” for launch!

June Roof Party

The clouds looked threatening, almost like they were saying that they weren’t going to give up so easily!  But the threat of a storm turned out to be mostly more hot air.

The other day I was sitting at Shao-hui’s place when Shao-hui herself came over to me and mentioned that it had been some time since we had a grill party in front of her place, and that she would like to have another one that week.  Well, I don’t need a personal invitation like that, but it sure was nice hearing Shao-hui say it.

The day to have it turned out to be Thursday, and faster than you can say “mu tan” we had the charcoal lit!

Dutch Oven in Kaohsiung

One of the great things about Dutch oven cooking is the fact that anywhere you can build a fire is anywhere you can cook a delicious meal.  I carried my 12″ Dutch oven down to Kaoshiung over the holiday because I knew there would be an afternoon where I would want to relax and cook.  This is the story about what I cooked.

Dutch Oven in Kaohsiung

I started out by cutting up onions.  I also had baby carrots and small white potatoes so I didn’t need to cut those items up.  The only other things that I had which needed to be cut up were some mild bell peppers (shown later).  This type of cut shown here is one that I learned from a Chinese master chef back when I was being trained for restaurant work.

Before we continue with our series, I would like to talk about the series and how I’ve written it.  First of all, I updated the WordPress In-series plug-in and it blew out all the previous series data.  I am unable to re-enter that information and get the updated plug-in to work and actually display series.  This means that all those series I wrote in the past are unconnected.  The articles are still there, but as in this series, there is no longer a list of them at the bottom so you can find all of them.  Sorry but you’ll have to use the search box at the upper right.  I didn’t do it!  UPDATE: I fixed it by creating a new series and editing the previous articles.  I do not want to have to do that for each series I’ve written!

Also, on these series that are not time-sensitive, I’ve been taking my sweet time writing about them.  That certainly is the case with this series, which I have written over many months time.  Also, in some cases I had to think about what I wanted to write about (even though I do outlines) and I also have other things to do.  So that explains why I often write about things that happened some time ago.  Honestly, it just doesn’t matter.

Now, onto the current article: We have some interesting things for you, so sit back and enjoy!

Our 2008 US Trip: Part Six

This is our father’s reaction to seeing Nancy coming in the front door.  He didn’t have his glasses on but he knew who it was right away!
