Recently my brother John visited Taiwan, but we weren’t able to blog on his visit in real time due to a couple of technical difficulties that are now resolved. So, without further delay, we bring you installment #1 of his visit!

This is John arriving in Taiwan at the Taoyuan International Airport. It was at night and we took him out for some food of course, but no photos.

Warning: In this installment, I documented the preparation and roasting of a pig in the local village. If such images disturb you, I recommend that you do not view them.
I talked with my friend Sonny, and we decided to throw a barbecue party for his relatives and friends in the village.

On the land behind Sonny’s home, he has a piggery. We selected one of his pigs to roast, Filipino style, over an open pit.

A few weeks ago, Titty Tea hosted a cookout for their regular customers. We’re going to show you what we cooked.

Now you know that anything that begins with charcoal and a torch is going to be good!

I thought I would talk about how I’m doing with my exercise routine, since I got the new machine a few weeks ago.

This is my home gym/music room. Having the Yamaha PA system directly across from the exercise machine makes it nice when listening to music while working out.

It’s been awhile since we’ve had a story about grillin’ good food, and also been awhile since we partied at Xiao-hui’s place! So, the time has come for us to bring you this article and introduce you to our favorite BBQ sauce, Bootsy BBQ! Bootsy BBQ is known as the “everything sauce” and it really is good for everything!
My long-time friend, Mr. Danny Brown is the man behind Bootsy BBQ, and he can be seen at the end of this recent article. He has a real hit on his hands with this sauce and you’ll be seeing us talking about it as it makes it way from the US into Asia and beyond! Bootsy BBQ is unlike anything you’ve seen or tried before and it’s not a tomato based product like most others. Bootsy BBQ has a flavor all it’s own and once you’ve tried it, you’ll never go back to using ordinary sauces.
Boosty BBQ is an extremely versatile sauce that can be used many ways. Here are 4 of them that I like:
- Marinade: As a marinade for meats, Bootsy BBQ is second to none. It works fast too, so the great part about using Boosty BBQ is if you don’t have a lot of time, you can still get the flavor benefits from using Bootsy BBQ. Even 30 minutes with Bootsy BBQ will make a huge difference.
- Grilling Sauce: Bootsy BBQ is fantastic on the grill! Just brush it on about 10 minutes before your meat is done, on both sides.
- Finishing Sauce: If you’re a real smoke-blower, you’ll love Bootsy BBQ as a finishing sauce. The flavor of Bootsy BBQ compliments smoked food so well that you’ll wonder how you ever got along without it!
- Dipping Sauce: Bootsy BBQ is unbelievable as a dipping sauce! It’s also great for vegetables too!

I took some of my Chinese language classmates out for lunch the other day. Where did we go? To Xiao-hui’s!

When we arrived there was very loud karaoke going on inside, so we opted to sit outside. It turned out to be a good choice because the weather was just beautiful!

Part of the 2010 USA Trip Series

I used to have a wood smoker back in New Hampshire, and I have missed smoking foods in Taiwan (although I do have a smoker in Thailand). We went in halves with my sister and her husband and picked up this Brinkmann smoker at Home Depot. I got to use it quite a few times during our visit. We’ll show you what we put in the smoker shortly.

Recently, Hui-chen and I celebrated our 3rd wedding anniversary. We decided to spend it at the newly-built Sheraton hotel in Jubei.

The room we stayed in was on the 21st floor. That is the top floor for rooms. There is a club on the 22nd floor for the exclusive use of guests on the 20th and 21st “club level” floors. Our room was luxurious and spacious.

BROL member Gunnstein came to Taiwan for a visit. One of the things on his agenda was to visit TW-Bents and pick up a new Cobra recumbent bicycle.

This slightly-out-of-focus shot is the meeting of Gunnstein (left) and Walter, the TW-Bents design engineer. They are exchanging business cards.

Michael Turton invited me down to Taichung to ride some hills on my recumbent trike. I don’t have that much experience with hills because there aren’t very many where I live. I was looking forward to seeing how the trike climbed, with my new 26 tooth chainring. I shot some video with my GoPro Helmet Hero Wide, video camera (visible on the front of my bike helmet) which you can see later on in this article. Michael took this shot of me standing in front of a reservoir at the top of the hill we climbed.
