On our last day in the US on this trip, I wanted to use the wood smoker again. It had been so long since I had cooked with one that I needed the practice to get back on my smoking game. So I chopped up some wood and started another cooking fire in the fire box, using white oak, which is what I normally like to cook with.

I know we’ve dragged this series out longer than any other we’ve done, but we’re coming to the end! After this installment, we’re going to show you what we did on the last day, and then what happened to us on the way home, so there will be 2 more and then the series is closed. I recently traveled to the Philippines and I want to start a new series on that trip, so without further delay, we bring you this installment:
People love ‘em or hate ‘em. There’s no middle ground with Krispy Kreme. Personally, I love them. When I was a kid, our favorite place to go after church on Sunday was Krispy Kreme. Hui-chen had never even seen one before so I made it a point to take her to one and sample their brand of doughnuts.

After New England, we returned to North Carolina, where we had 2 weeks until our return flight back home to Taiwan. We spent quite a few days relaxing out by the pool and enjoying the local cuisine.
We checked out the new downtown baseball park for an evening game.

As soon as Hui-chen and I got the car and started driving away from the North End area, the rain stopped! This was very similar to what happened to us when we visited Salem a few days earlier. But by the time it stopped raining completely we were away from the North End area, so we decided to take a look around downtown Boston, since we would be leaving New England in a few hours from now.

As we head into this new year, we’re coming to a close on this series soon. On our last day in New England I wanted to take Hui-chen to the North End, the famous Italian section of Boston. Years ago I lived in the North End, on Charter Street and there were some things that I wanted Hui-chen to see, and also I wanted her to experience some of the delicious food that the North End is famous for.
We turned on Commercial Street and headed into the famous North End of Boston….

There was another place that I wanted to take Hui-chen. We had seen this place on TLC in Taiwan, and Hui-chen expressed an interest in visiting there. So, naturally I had to take her. Where are we talking about?
We headed to Revere, Massachusetts.

Hui-chen wanted to see more of Salem, as it certainly is a beautiful and remarkably clean city. I used to live in Lynn, just to the south, and certainly I’d been to Salem many times, but I had never explored it in any detail. This photo essay is not intended to be a review of the city of Salem, but rather an account of some of the things we saw and did. As usual you can go here to learn more about Salem. We took one of these sight-seeing trolley tours. The tour was extremely informative, with much more information than we ever could remember, unfortunately! We recommend one of these tours because you get to see the best of the city with a knowledgeable guide.

We have lots more photos to show you, so we decided to do sort of an intermediate article about what we did on the evening when we returned to Mass from NH’s beautiful North Country.
After conferring with our friends Fred and Mary, we ended up in Salem, Massachusetts, at the Waterfront Hotel & Suites. Not only did we spend the evening in Salem, Hui-chen and I explored the city on the following day, so you won’t want to miss the next article in this series.

After spending time in the Mt. Washington area, and taking the cog up to the summit, we continued north to the very northernmost parts of New Hampshire.
We passed the entrance to the Mount Washington Auto Road on our way out of the area, heading north.

Dear Readers, we took a fantastic trip up to the top of Mount Washington on the Cog Railway. We have over 100 photos to show you in this article, so get ready to go along with us as we head up the mountain!
Not far up Route 302 from the Mount Washington hotel is the road that leads to the Cog Railway. I won’t bore you with too many historical facts about it. You may click on the link and read about it on Wikipedia if you like. If you’re in the Mt. Washington area, it’s worth the trip up to the top of the mountain via “the cog.”
