We’ve come to the end of our series on our Thai-Lao trip of 2010. We hope you’ve enjoyed reading about our trip as much as we have enjoyed bringing it to you through the pages of our blog. You’ve already seen what we did on our return to Thailand and on our last day in Thailand, including the food, so this, our last installment will feature the only remaining food left – our lunch on our last day in Laos .

We went to a little outdoor place along the side of the road. This truck, packed full of motorcycles bound for Viet Nam, was right beside us. I couldn’t help noticing a very interesting detail about this truck:

The next few days of our Thai-Lao trip were interesting and now you’ll get to see some of the dishes we enjoyed.
One of the evenings, I tried a Lao “whisky bucket” which (I didn’t know at the time) is meant for several people to drink at once:

I had them hold the Red Bull (I don’t get drinking Red Bull at all) and just stick with the whisky and the mixer. It was good and in reality not as much liquor as it might appear.

Photos by MJ Klein WARNING: FOOD PHOTOS!
As you recall from our series on our recent Thai-Lao trip, we traveled to Laos on Day 3. We didn’t get any food photos because we were eating on the run so-to-speak and we had nothing remarkable. So we’ll continue with Day 4 and show you what we had to eat on our first day back in Laos.
The first order of business for the day was breakfast:

Spicy Girl (left) took us to this shop where she and Prince Roy enjoy the traditional Lao breakfast dish – noodle soup. Michael Cannon gives it a try in this first photo.

On the way to visiting a Lao village, our guide told us that the trucks carrying huge logs were on their way to Vietnam.

We saw quite a few of these over-loaded logging trucks on the road that day.

Continuing with our series on our recent Thailand/Laos trip, we’re going to show you some other interesting sites in Xiengkhuang Province.

This is Wat Phiawat, otherwise known as the “Chief of Temples.” This temple was used for royal ceremonies, and not only was the biggest temple in Xiengkhuang town, it was also the oldest. Wat Phaiwat was completely destroyed by bombs during the war.

Day 6 found us scrambling to get to the village of Ban Na before it was too late in the afternoon to hike to the elephant tower. You may read about our first trip to Ban Na, here.
We began by negotiating with a taxi for a ride from Vientiane to the village. 3 years ago, Hui-chen and I took a taxi to Ban Na for 700 baht. Today, the taxi driver said “2,500 baht.” That was a crazy price so we began negotiating it down. Finally he firmly settled on 1,000 baht. The ride took about 1 hour including a stop for fuel and some snacks at a gas station/store. When we arrived at the village it was late afternoon and everyone was outside relaxing.

Day 5 of our Thailand-Laos trip found us in one of the most beautiful places you can find in Laos, Vang Vieng.
We hired a van with driver and headed out on the road. I took a few shots of the countryside from the van. Road in Laos are rather rough. They don’t have such a good road bed and with all the trucks that have to use the roads, they get beaten up rapidly. You can’t make any significant speed on Lao roads because you will shake your vehicle apart because of the bumpiness! Before I forget, some of these photos are geotagged so be sure to click on them and then take a look at the map. (more…)

Day 3 was our day to travel up to Laos from Thailand. We decided to take the Thai-Lao International bus, but unlike the last time, this time there was a new bus service from Khonkaen. This bus left in the afternoon, so Day 3 was rather uneventful, spent mostly on waiting for this bus to leave and then riding it up to Laos.
