Photosynth, A New Service for Photo Enthusiasts

I found a new service (thanks to my RSS reader) for people like me who take a lot of photos and are looking for new ideas and ways to use them. Photosynth creates a 3D model of the subject based on uploaded photos. Photosyth goes way beyond the idea of a panorama and really does give the viewer a feeling like they are viewing the actual subject.  Installing the program will also install a brower plug-in for viewing the output, called a “synth.”

Here’s more from Microsoft:

“An Entirely New Medium

Synths constitute an entirely new visual medium. Photosynth analyzes each photo for similarities to the others, and uses that data to estimate where a photo was taken. It then re-creates the environment and uses that as a canvas on which to display the photos. The potential uses of Photosynth can range from sharing experiences to storytelling and documentation.”

You may view my synths here.

For people like me who take a lot of photos of the same subject, but from different angles and perspectives, this is a perfect application to gather all those photos together for maximum effect.  Another great thing about Photosynth is that you can embed the synths into websites:

If you enjoy photography, why not give Photosynth a try?

Nikon D-80 Blues

As you probably remember, I sent my D-80 to the repair shop to fix the hot pixels problem.  Back when I had a Nikon Coolpix 5700, it also had developed hot pixels.  I downloaded a free Russian software application that connected to my camera via USB and solved the problem in about 1 hour.  Today, after 4 weeks I finally got my D-80 back!  It never left the camera shop though.  The hot pixel problem is solved, but something happened to the Menu button in the process.  I have to press the Menu button down really hard to make it work.  That was not an original problem and something happened to it while at the repair shop.  So, my D-80 turned right around and went back today.

Needless to say I am something less than happy.  Something a lot less than happy!

We took Dad out on Belews Lake on a pontoon boat. It was a great day and everyone had a wonderful time on the calm waters of the lake. We were going along at a relatively slow speed and came across this snake swimming at a surprisingly high speed:

Snake On The Lake

I was using my new Glidecam Pro 2000 with the body pod and managed to get some video too.

With this gorgeous weather, I was up on the roof grilling my dinner last night. Of course, I had my Nikon with me.

We see gorgeous sunsets like this all the time, but the view is always ruined by wires.

Remembering 5371

I was exactly one year ago today that I took this famous photograph:

The Final Seconds of 5371:2

I think it’s safe for me to say that I do not accept the results of the official investigation: “pilot error.” In every photograph where the position of the rudder is able to be determined, it is in the same position: “left.”

I went up to the roof to check things out after a few days of heavy rains and found that the air was unusually clear, with an interesting cloud cover.

On our little trip to Wulai, we’ve seen that there is a lot more to the place than simply the waterfall for which it is famous. Wulai has hot springs, a river that is used for bathing, a downtown shopping area and an historical passenger railroad, in addition to the waterfall. Also many people don’t realize that you can see several other waterfalls within a few kilometers of Wulai. There are some excellent trails in the area for hiking.

Beautiful Wulai

We’re going to take a look at a few things on the way down to the waterfall. One of them is another shot of what’s been called “the cutest little train” the Log Cart.

Hui-chen and I took a little sight-seeing trip to Wulai after our return from China recently.  If you haven’t been there in awhile, you should take a visit and see for yourself, what a lovely place Wulai really is.

Wulai Visit
Besides the famous waterfall, Wulai is known for these emerald green waters (and wires!).  These photos are un-processed and the colors are just how the Nikon D80 photographed them.

Blue Sky Hoedown

Photos by MJ Klein, and others where noted.

It was almost a throwdown in some respects, but the party at the Blue Sky was more or less successful in that people had a relatively good time, and nobody got hurt, although the event was not up to my personal standards. First, let me thank everyone who ventured out on that cold windy evening to join us. Your company is what makes things like this worthwhile. Second, please allow me to apologize (more on that later).
Blue Sky Party
Why I like Nikon cameras, reason #57: IR remote control. This shot was taken on a tripod from my seat at the table at the far end of the shot.

Many of Taiwan’s famous people were on hand at the surreal Blue Sky.
