We bought a new camera recently – the Nikon D7000. Our Nikon D80 [1] is showing it’s age and it was time for an upgrade after 6 years. We tend to keep and use our equipment for a long time, so when we upgrade it makes sense for us to buy premium products that will last.

We’re using the Sigma lens we bought several years ago [3] as it works very well with this camera and has Optical Stabilization.
Of course we have some test shots for you!

The D7000 has auto-ISO like all upper end Nikon DSLRs. This shot was taken by the light of the streetlight and auto-ramped up to ISO 6400 (which is the maximum for auto ISO) (Editors Note: ISO 6400 is the out-of-the-box setting. You can set the D7000 for auto-ISO up to 28,000 in the setup menu). For a streetlight photo, the white-balance is pretty good I would say.

Everyone knows that I love night shots [6], and clearly this rig can handle low light situations very well.

I’m still making adjustments because the colors aren’t popping yet. I don’t post-process; I get the shots I want right out of the camera. I’ll have it adjusted the way I like soon enough and the colors will be bright just like I had the D80 setup.

That’s some serious gear. Makes our D3100 look pretty basic in comparison. 🙂
During our vacation there were a lot of opportunities to compare the quality of the DSLR and the smart phones. Makes you realize just how much better a proper camera is, but also how much more convenient it is to use the phone …
Now I’m thinking of getting an “eye-fi” and maybe make better use of the DSLR with that. (eye-fi is basically a combination of SDHC memory card and wifi adapter, so you can tether your camera to your phone with that.) I don’t have any experience with it yet, but thought I’d pass it one – maybe it’s of interest.

Stefan, the D3100 is nothing to sneeze about. you can take the same great photos with that model too. with all of them though, you have to play around with the settings to get them where you want them for the best picture quality. i have yet to play around with one of those eye-fi cards, but the possibilities sound interesting! take care.

hi Johnny. the D7000 is the top of the Nikon DX heap. the D800 is an FX format and i didn’t want to have to buy new glass just for that. i don’t really need an FX format camera. besides, the D7000 is faster and is actually a better camera, feature wise. thanks Johnny, and hope to see you back in Taiwan soon!
