Thursday Grill Party

Photos by Hui-chen and MJ Klein

The other day I was sitting at Shao-hui’s place when Shao-hui herself came over to me and mentioned that it had been some time since we had a grill party in front of her place, and that she would like to have another one that week.  Well, I don’t need a personal invitation like that, but it sure was nice hearing Shao-hui say it.

The day to have it turned out to be Thursday, and faster than you can say “mu tan” we had the charcoal lit!

Thursday Grill Party [2]

I brought my mini kettle grill over and set it up outside of Shao-hui’s place.

Shao-hui did the marinade herself this time, and presented me with some huge slabs of what we call “fei ro” or “fatty meat” and we mean pork, of course.

I adjusted the air input on the bottom of the grill and then placed the cover on top.  Remember, smoke is what flavors grilled food and the amount of smoke that was generated and cycled throughout the grill with the top on was considerable.  The flavor of the cooked meat was awesome.

My friend John came down from Taipei to hang out and enjoy the food and drink (Sang Som of course!).  Unfortunately his new bride Carrie [6] couldn’t make it.

This is a shot of some of the meat, cut up on the serving plate.  I’m a little light on the photographs due to the amount of alcohol consumed I think….

Thursday Grill Party [8]

I love these late afternoon grill parties because then the evening descends and makes for a nice atmosphere.

I’m heating up my vegetable griller for the next course.

Hui-chen arrived, finally.  She was busy with work.

Thursday Grill Party [11]

John was busy with eating and drinking, and so was I!

Notice the jar on the table in front of Hui-chen.  That’s Bootsy BBQ Sauce [13], and I’m going to do another story [14] on that sometime.  The Legend of Bootsy is making it’s way across Taiwan, slowly but surely.

Thursday Grill Party [15]

Here I am, grilling vegetables right over the fire.  The smoke flavored them quite well I would say.

Thursday Grill Party [16]

Then, Saumen (right) and his friend John arrived.  Notice the bottle of Sang Som – there is barely anything left.  We ran across the street and got another bottle right away!

Thursday Grill Party [17]

Not long after, our good friend Joanna arrived.  It’s a rare treat to have Joanna hanging out with us because she is so busy usually.

There was so much food that we had to add another small table from inside.  We’re working on the second bottle of the Royal Thai Rum here.

Thursday Grill Party [20]

Left to right: Saumen, John, Joanna and Hui-chen (by this time Carrie’s husband John had to leave).

Number of bottles of Sang Som consumed: 2.5.

Amount of meat grilled and eaten: A lot.

Number of happy people: 6 (plus a few of Shao-hui’s customers and she herself).

Not shown: Drunken guitar playing.

Yum, MJ. Sorry I missed the party. It looks like everyone had a great time. It’s good to know that Shao-hui is back. We’ve missed her cooking.

Dennis, yeah that will definitely warm you up! did you also have kimchee?

#8 Comment By dennis On February 16, 2009 @ 20:06

yes we did. and bean sprouts, the usual free dishes that most korean restaurants (well pretty much all of them in nz/aust) provide.

Dennis, you are making me want to go back to the Korean restaurant where we went a few weeks ago!

I especially like the picture in which your are grilling veggies. Very dramatic – with the fire in the center and the smoke around you. Like the Nordic god of BBQ (or grilling as the case may be). Out of curiosity: did Hui-chen take that picture?

#11 Comment By thenhbushman On February 15, 2009 @ 22:11

Stephan, the fire kicked up because of the oil and other ingredients i put in the vegetable mix in order to cook them that way. one has to be very careful of flareups but overall it’s well worth the effort because the taste of grilled vegetables is hard to beat! Hui-chen did take that photo.
