It’s been awhile since we had an article featuring food and last weekend had a lot of it! So now we’re going to show you some of the dishes that we enjoyed! You have been warned!

Hui-chen and I met some geocachers in Taichung for an event. We’re Taiwanese so naturally the first thing on the agenda was lunch!

I grabbed a few shots of the dishes before they were all gone!

We (unsuccessfully) hunted a geocache in the pouring rain. After that he headed down to Kaohsiung to meet our family for dinner.

HC and her mom and dad, anxiously awaiting the dishes to come out of the kitchen. I white-balanced the D80 for the environment and did not use flash so I wouldn’t draw attention to my shooting.

Dried tofu, cucumbers and cold noodles where the starters.

I ordered a pink sparkling wine. Although not as good as Moet (and more expensive actually) it went along well with the dishes.

Cold sesame noodles with a touch of wasabi. I’ve had sesame noodles before but not like this! Excellent version!

Oxtail stew. This dish has some excellent beef fat pieces!

Mapo tofu. A hobby of mine is to try this dish everywhere that I can find it. Although not as good as some places, this dish was still very well prepared and tasty.

This is Crispy Duck, Northern Style and it was incredible!

The meat is sliced off and placed in these Chinese buns. This dish was a big hit!

We finished off the meal with Taiwan’s legendary Shark Fin Soup.

I got a few shots of the family after the meal. Here we see Hui-chen’s parents looking good!
Nothing beats good food, and good company!

mapo tofu with rice is one of my favs of all time….. i can eat that all day, everyday!

andres » i agree! i love that stuff – made it in a Dutch oven several times.

Nice pics! I try not to, but I tend to judge Chinese restaurants by their mapo tofu.

Wow great pics! What ISO were you using? SS and aperture? In shots like these I almost always need to use flash but have always been concerned about bothering other people – and they have, on occasion!

Solemn Observer » with Nikon you never have to worry about ISO because of the Auto-ISO setting. Nikon is light-years ahead of the competition! for more information about each photo, click on it to go to the flickr album and then click on the EXIF information, called “More Properties.”

MJ great pics as always. The food great and quality pictures without the flash. I am currently experimenting with my camera to acheive this. HAving the auto ISO setting is a fantastic option, luckily I only have to push a butting to adjust.
I am enjoying the challenge and have lots of practice with many errors to come. I love the battery life. I have shot in excess of 400 pictures and still haven’t had to recharge the battery.
The Ox tail or veal shanks Osso Buco, I would kill for something like that right now. I knew a French guy who made the best Osso Buco at his restaurant I have ever tasted. Slow cooked stews, wow I am hungry.
The duck and Chinese buns looked a real winner, I haven’t seen them before. Looked like a really good evening.

Brunty » you gotta be a bit careful of those shots without the flash as they can get a bit shaky. i do have the optical stabilization system on the Sigma lens that helps in low-light conditions.
it was a fun evening, for one reason especially – no one talked about how much everything cost! that is a typical trait of Chinese society and i’d much rather discuss the ingredients and eat the food instead of obsessing over how much the bill is.
