It was almost a throwdown in some respects, but the party at the Blue Sky was more or less successful in that people had a relatively good time, and nobody got hurt, although the event was not up to my personal standards. First, let me thank everyone who ventured out on that cold windy evening to join us. Your company is what makes things like this worthwhile. Second, please allow me to apologize (more on that later).
Blue Sky Party
Why I like Nikon cameras, reason #57: IR remote control. This shot was taken on a tripod from my seat at the table at the far end of the shot.

Many of Taiwan’s famous people were on hand at the surreal Blue Sky.

Dear Readers,

We apologize for not featuring Bushman’s Picks last week, due to the Lunar New Year holiday. We were out of our office, enjoying all kinds of cool foods with our family and friends. So, on the one hand you didn’t get the picks, but on the other hand you’ll eventually get to see the pics! (more…)

Tourist Night Market, Kaohsiung
Hui-chen and I were in Kaohsiung for Chinese New Year. We decided to go to the Liuhe tourist night market for dinner. After finding this huge crowd, we decided to pass on dinner there!

So, how busy was your Chinese New Year?

Our friend Craig has an article about the new KRT system, beating us to the punch with the scoop, but we couldn’t be more pleased, as Craig’s article goes into historical details about the system that we weren’t going to cover. So, the articles would appear to compliment each other. We recommend Craig’s article for excellent background information, and of course, his legendary photography.

Note: During our test ride experience, we encountered several different designations for the system, including Kaohsiung “Metro Rapid Transit System”, “Kaohsiung Rapid Transit System”, and simply “Rapid Transit System”. For the sake of uniformity, we will use the term “KRT” to refer to the Kaohsiung Rapid Transit System in our articles. We hope that the term sticks, and will differentiate the Kaohsiung system from the Taipei system known as “MRT“.

Kaohsiung Rapid Transist System
We entered the KRT at the famous Sanduo Shopping district station.

Before we take a ride (Part II), we’d like to show you some station features inside and out.

Stories From My Past: The Ghost of Highway 401

My friend Mr. Chen and I used to like to go to Fayetteville on the weekends. It was a short drive from Raleigh, NC, down highway 401. Normally, we’d head down to Fayetteville on Sunday evenings after the restaurant closed at 10:00pm, and we didn’t have to worry about being back early because Mr. Chen had Mondays off work.

Another year has come and gone.  Hui-chen and I are in south Taiwan visiting the family here.  We won’t be back in our office until Monday so we’re going to take the weekend off.  There fore there will be no Bushman’s Picks this week.  We apologize for any inconvenience this might cause.

When we return, we will have an exclusive report on the new Kaohsiung Rapid Transit system.  So if you are a fan of the Taiwan rails and transit systems, you will not want to miss this!

We’re also looking forward to seeing everyone at the Blue Sky in Taipei county on 2/16!

Take care everyone and we’ll see you in a couple more days.

The Dreaded Weiya!

Food Photos by MJ Klein

At this time of year there are many articles about people in Taiwan attending their company weiya or banquet. I don’t know why but most people write badly about them, as if they hate them. Personally I like weiya banquets and Hui-chen and I were invited to one recently. I like these banquets because it gives me a chance to meet with workers and bosses in an informal manner, do some drinking with them and get a chance to rub shoulders without any pressure. I’ve seen a few bosses get drunk and let loose and even sing a little karaoke. This article will stick to the food though, because although some people hate the weiya, I like the weiya food!

First out of the chute was this appetizer dish, consisting of (clockwise from the bottom) imitation crab meat with a Hollandaise sauce, fish skin, sliced noodles, some kind of seafood skin stuff, and sliced duck meat plus beef.
