Lunch in Baoshan

While visiting our good friends in nearby Baoshan, Hui-chen and I enjoyed the following dishes with them:

Classic cold chicken.  This stuff was ice cold and delicious!

Some of our famous “hollow vegetable” known all over Taiwan.  Well prepared with just the right amount of red pepper and garlic.

“Pai-gu” or pork short ribs.  The sauce was not to sweet - just right.

Squid and mixed vegetables.  Awesome!

Deep fried shrimp, lightly battered, with pineapple, and mayonaise.  This is a common dish in Taiwan and this particular version was very good.  The shrimp is usually hot with the pineapple being cold.  Makes for a nice contrast.

Finally, a very good miso soup with salmon.  More Chinese style than Japanese I would say, this soup was the perfect ending to the meal.

Now this dish bears mentioning as it was prepared by the husband of the couple whom we were visiting.  Its a really nice fruit cocktail that wasn’t too sweet, but just right.  We made it disappear.

Hui-chen and I visited the Taiwan Beer Bar, in Taipei.  Its a down-home Taiwanese place where the Taiwan beer is dirt cheap, and the food is good.

Hui-chen and I enjoyed the fresh draft beer.

We ordered some classic Chinese sausage and as you can see, the dish came with plenty of sliced garlic.

We are going back there this weekend!

No one reads our blog for the brilliant commentary, because there isn’t any.  So, its about the photos.

I’d never been to Baoshan before, and we went there the other day to hang out with some friends there.  Naturally, the D80 was around my neck.  Here are some photos that I want to post because they are so Taiwanese.

Now the next 2 shots were taken from my rooftop in Hukou:

An EVA flight going directly overhead.

Blogger Meetup at the Taiwan Beer Bar

Hui-chen and I met blogger Andres and his wife Karen (and co-worker Rich) last weekend.  As it turns out, we sort-of “met” Prince Roy, but we didn’t have a chance to talk about anything.  Michael Turton has also expressed an interest in meeting Andres and Karen, along with an interest in hanging out at the Taiwan Beer Bar too.

This is Prince Roy at the Taiwan Beer Bar (2nd from left), but I didn’t know it at the time this photo was taken. I was shooting the tacky beer bottle lights.  What ambiance….  lol

So, how about it everyone?  How about a Blogger Beer Meeting at the Taiwan Beer Bar this Saturday evening?  Hui-chen and I will be there after 18:00.

All due respect to Dr. Jerome Keeting for his programs of elevated content for bloggers held on the first Saturday of every month.  We just want to drink some cheap brew and talk trash.

Everyone is welcome to hang out with us, blogger or not!  We love to meet readers too of course!  Hope to see you all there!

We don’t go into Taipei very often. Its a love-hate situation. I like the cool stuff you can do in the city, but it’s….. well its a big dirty city and there is too much traffic and too many people for my liking. But after reading about Taiwan blogger Andres’ visit to the Taiwan Beer Bar, I really wanted to check the place out. After corresponding with Andres we decided to go up to Taipei and meet.

Hui-chen and I went to the Taiwan Beer Bar first, and sampled the fresh local beer.

Dinner with the Family in Kaohsiung

Featured Cuisine: Japanese  Photos by MJ Klein

The day after our wedding, the whole family went out for dinner at an excellent Japanese restaurant in Kaohsiung.

Beautifully appointed, shoes must be removed to enter the traditional style individual dining rooms.

My lovely wife, Hui-chen ordered food for everyone.  The menu is extensive and the prices are reasonable.

Pin-chen, Hui-ling and Shiang all love Japanese food, as do we.

Shiang has that look in his eye!  We are waiting for the first course to arrive and he is bored!

He loves making faces!

Finally, the first course arrives: mixed sashimi.  The quality is excellent.

Shiang demonstrates the swimming styles of the various fishes we are eating.

Next up is a delicious hot pot style concoction.  The broth a was very Japanese styled bonito flavor.  Really nice.

As you can see, it boiled down in just a few minutes.  Great delicious!

Plenty of leisurely conversation during the meal.  Notice the sliced beef at the lower left, for the hot pot.

Grilled fish chin - one of my favorites.

Skewered grilled chicken with sauce and sesame seeds.

Dragon mustache with bonito flakes.

Another favorite in Taiwan: deep friend oysters.  One of my personal favorites, this dish was prepared with a slight variation on the breaded coating.  Very good.

We couldn’t have a Japanese meal without sushi!  It was as good as it looks in this photo, believe me.

The next 3 shots are of an asparagus and bamboo salad.

This was the most interesting presentation of this salad type I have yet seen.  Also present were mashed yams and potato salad with lots of sweet mayonnaise.

Last but not least was the vegetable tempura. Very nicely prepared and presented.

From our family to yours, here’s to good health and good eating!

Walkabout in Hsinchu City

Photos by MJ Klein

Last week, Hui-chen and I did something that we haven’t done in some time:  we walked around Hsinchu, taking photos and enjoyed the scenery.  For those of you who enjoy photos of Taiwan, this post is for you.  Light on the commentary, heavy on the photographs.

This is a famous circle in Hshinchu, off of Dong Men Road.

This bird was hunting small fish in the waterway.

A very strange looking public restroom, with the typical outdoor sink and mirror and not-very-well concealed urinals.

A local icon: The Flying Pig.

This is a very nice area to just take a walk and enjoy our beautiful weather.  btw, does Hui-chen look any different now that she is a married woman?  I think so.  I think she looks better now.

Care to get tipsy at the Tipsy Music Bar?

This photo is so typical of Taiwan.  It could be anywhere on the island….

Electric motor repair shop.

At least the sidewalk has a little space for walking.

But not much!

Wanna get bombed at the B52?

This one is worth mentioning again.  What were they thinking?

Hardware store.  Notice the steel rope.  Cool.

This guy was so intent on his repair work that he didn’t notice me taking this photo.

Nomination for “The World’s Smallest Pizza Shop” award.

Our lunch.  Not bad.

What kind of drinks do they serve from their private collection?

Unless you can read Chinese, you have no idea what they are selling.

Ahh, Taiwan, Land of Food, and More Food!

I think we should walk around more often!
